In 2002 a group of friends lost a football match in controversial circumstances against another team of their friends. Jamie Philp, Rob Butcher, and Rich Theobald came up with a plan to unite both of these sides for the greater good and enter into a 5-a-side competition at the Kings Centre, East Grinstead. After reaching the Semi Finals the team was again split for the Inter 6th Form Cup. The Mavericks came second to the breakaway team.
Later that summer the teams reunited under the Mavericks name to enter another Kings Centre tournament. The Mavericks earned their first piece of silverware in this competition. The team was automatically entered into the area finals and finished a respectable 3rd place.
Most of the players left for University after the summer and because of this the team became stretched, but continued to play and entered the Croyden Power League 5-a-side. The impractical nature of the location forced the team to enter the Saint Hill 7-a-side league where a 4th place finish was obtained. Tournaments at Soccer Box and Danehill were played during the summer 2003 period and the team reached the semi finals on both occasions.
The team has played in other tournaments around the country whilst players have been at university, and have continued to take part in local friendlies. However the next chapter in the Mavericks story is set to be perhaps the most exciting. Cowden Mavericks F.C. was set up during the 2005 summer by James Salter. His aim was to take the team into the big time. Over the coming months and years the Mavericks will play for the honour of Cowden in the Mid Sussex league all over the county and of course at the Mavericks new home at Cowden Green.
